One of my clients felt he was not getting enough money from his current job. He wanted to claim for a salary increase and asked for my support to prepare for this request.

But this is not the way it works. Preparing for this discussion with his boss and HR department might have been what my client WANTED as that moment it time. But it did not feel like it was what he NEEDED at that moment in time.

So instead I asked him: “What tangible value have you created for the company in the last 6 months? How have your actions and decisions impacted the top-line and the bottom-line of the company? I urge you to seriously reflect on that matter. And only when you are ready with this work, we talk.”

After a month of silence, he reached out, saying, “Delphine, I am ready now,” and we scheduled a conversation.

He realized that while he had indeed contributed value, his performance fell slightly below expectations and, more importantly, below what he knew he is capable of.

Our focus shifted from merely preparing for a salary increase discussion to exploring the vast field of opportunities he could tap into to deliver substantial value to his company, making a raise an undeniable proposition.

Over the next 12 months, he dedicated himself to a challenging productivity and cost-savings project that he not only successfully executed but also convinced his management that he was the right fit for the job, on top of his usual responsibilities.

Here is the outcome of a recent discussion he had with his line management : not just a raise, but also a promotion, propelling him into a team management position for the first time ever. What an exciting challenge!

Before asking for more, in any aspect of your life, I invite you to consider: “What is the value I bring to xxx?”

So that what you ask for becomes a natural outcome.

Love,

Delphine
