She tells me about how life at work is affecting her. The poor content of her job, the toxic relationship with her boss, her lack of perspectives, and the unfulfilled promises for promotion. “How do I cope with that?”
-I don’t buy into this story. So now, let’s invent a new story with the same characters. The thread of this new story is “You are the problem, not them.”
I saw a wide range of emotions on her face—shock, puzzlement, anger, sadness. She was truly uncomfortable with this request.
And I also saw the shift—something in her posture and her gaze. She got it in an instant.
She began to reflect. “I am responsible for this situation. I allowed it to happen. I never challenged the content of my role. I never clearly expressed my aspirations and what I want for my career. Here is what I want to do now…”
And that is precisely what she started doing from that conversation onwards. One step at a time, she began revealing her talents and strengths. Unapologetically.
From reactor to creator. From victim to victor.
I invite you to ask yourself: “What if I am the problem here?”
What could change from that angle?
Be brave… “You hold the key,” as Madonna sings.
Love
