While traveling in Costa Rica with my family, I experienced 3 unforgettable moments of pure service. Each one left a mark. Here is the second one.
Tortuguero is known to be a must-see in Costa Rica. A magical place, yes, but very touristy.
When searching for a place to stay, I tried, as always, to avoid the crowds and souvenir shops. I looked beyond the main listings and found a jewel: a small lodge run by Gloria and Sergio, hidden in the quieter village of San Francisco.
From the moment we arrived, everything felt personal and thoughtful. A warm welcome, a pool just for us and another couple, fresh juices with fruit from their own trees, and two unforgettable tours.
The first: a night turtle-watching experience. Thanks to their small boat, we could quietly move between different spots, avoiding the long walks and large crowds. And always with full respect for the turtles and their habitat.
The second: a half-day boat tour through the Tortuguero canals. While most operators offer a 1- to 2-hour loop, Sergio took his time, waiting for the morning rush to clear, then guiding us through the national park when it was nearly empty. We saw caimans, howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, spider monkeys, and more. Gently, respectfully, and without any rush. A caiman sat perfectly still, striking a photo-ready pose, while boats packed with 20+ people cruised past, not even noticing.
Pure service and care. For a memorable family experience. And outstanding value for money.
What stays with me
- Finding small, meaningful experiences takes a bit of effort. But the reward is absolutely worth it.
- The best service often comes from people who aren’t trying to prove anything. Just sharing what they love, with care, pride, and joy. Not through a website or Instagram. In real life.
- Don’t be afraid to go slightly off the main road (literally and metaphorically)! That’s often where authenticity lives.
I’ve always been drawn to “companies of one.”
People who don’t need to shout or chase. They let their work speaks for itself. That’s how I’ve chosen and keep choosing the guides who shaped my life. That’s also how I chose to build my own practice: quietly, through word of mouth and referrals, one meaningful connection at a time.
No shiny brochure. No big marketing machine. Just real conversations, in real life.
So if this story resonates with you … maybe that’s where ours begins?
Be brave.
Love,
Delphine
