Do you remember saying “it’s temporary, I’ll leave in 3 years max to pursue something else ?”. One of my clients did. About his job. That was 18 years ago.
As a kid already he was handed a script. Stay in line. Good grades. Right school. Stable job. Retirement plan.
At some point, he considered quitting to start his own sports business abroad. So he asked for advice. Well-intentioned people. Family. Friends. People who genuinely care for him. “Do you think it’s responsible with the young kids at home ? You are in a comfortable situation, why would you put you and your family at risk? Maybe it is time you grow up and let go of the crazy ideas ?”. And so he listened. Because they loved him. Because he loved them and didn’t want to disappoint them.
Sounds familiar ?
But, by giving up on his dream he lost himself in the process. And ended up miserable. Inside, of course. You would never have spotted it from the outside.
After years of being told not to colour outside the lines, he had forgotten he was allowed to draw his owns.
He is now creating his own frame. It is not irresponsible. It is not naive. It takes a great deal of courage. And this time, he decided not to ask for anyone’s advice and explore his own way.
Your turn … what did you give up on because someone told you to grow up?
Be brave.
